AutismGambia Officially registered as Gambia Association for Autism and Developmental Disabilities (GAADD), AutismGambia is a US-registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization (EIN: 83-1997300) which aims to promote the welfare of individuals and families caring for members with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. GAADD is also registered as a non-governmental organization in The Gambia. It was founded in 2018 by Gambian parents and close friends of children with ASD living in the USA and UK. After overcoming the initial shock after the diagnosis of her own son, Bouba, Mrs. Sainabou Jobe Jabang realized how little exposure she had growing up in her native Gambia where she was born and lived her entire life until University. She was faced with the reality of the dire lack of knowledge, support and resources, all of which are crucial in caring for individuals with developmental disabilities. The challenges are compounded by the stigma, myths, taboos and misinformation that is attached to the disability causing families to hide their affected children rather than seek the required support. Moreover, even those who wish to seek support have little to no options because the resources are non-existent. Sainabou decided that inaction was not an option for her. She invited her friends, many of whom are parent advocates, and began sensitization in her community and on social media before eventually forming this organization to do more.
